Much of the early Factory pressings are not great. This is what i need. Also great that the Pennine version is included on side B. Sleeve and inner sleeve are ok, although the inner sleeve had a small crease. Reply Notify me 3 Helpful. JDubs July 15, Report. I was just talking about Joy Division with a 23 year-old kid that I work with and was so impressed with his appreciation for classic music from so far before his time.

Flag Dave Dodd on December 14, General Comment This is simply the most honest and sad song ever written about love and relationships. Sometime ago I read in an interview with Bernard Sumner that the other members of Joy Division never realised that all the lyrics written by Ian were about his own life.
If you now look back, it was so obvious Maybe they were to young and blinded by the success of the band at that time. Too young and sometimes the obvious is hard to see because in a way people don't want to see it.
Sad all around. Flag Tessienoodle on February 05, Shadowinthelight i didnt know until recinly that the rsaonb my brother connects with this song so mutch is because its the story of his life and i fear he connects to ian to mutch Flagged meganchadwick3 on March 18, My Interpretation There's a definite irony to the song; a sense of strange doom, despite the inclusion of 'love'.
While this was clearly never intended, it's often struck me as reminiscent of a failed friendship, rather than a romance. For whatever reason other partners, obligations, so forth they can't have a romantic relationship, and there's too much intensity for the dynamic to remain platonic. And thus, 'love' will 'tear them apart'. Why again? Maybe this isn't the first time. They could've been battling it awhile. At first, the more intimate lyrics seemed irreconcilable for such an interpretation, until I presumed, as friends in an 'it's complicated' sort of situation tend to do, some form of sexual relationship of a casual nature emerges - and that won't do, either.
The feelings run too deep, and there's really no middle road. Fronted by charismatic — and epileptic — frontman Curtis they delivered some classic non-album, stand-alone singles: the manically engaged Transmission and its polar opposite, Love Will Tear Us Apart.
It was written on the bass and drums and then Bernard put the keyboard on it. Curtis insisted that his songs were open to interpretation. Arranged for mounting effect, with its swooping and soaring, it creates an indelible imprint. The ones that were our favourites were ballsy and angsty, like Shadowplay or Transmission , because you could hide behind the song. U2 singer Bono said of the encounter:. Talking to Ian Curtis is But when he got behind the microphone he really surged forth; there was another energy.
It seemed like he was just two people and, you know, "Love Will Tear Us Apart", it was like [when] that record was released The single was re-released in and reached number 19 on the UK charts and number 3 in New Zealand during March It was first recorded for a John Peel session in November , then re-recorded in January and March It is the latter version that appears on Substance.
The January version, which has become known as the "Pennine version", originally appeared as one of the single's B-sides. In , to publicise the release of Permanent , the track was reissued, complete with a new remix by Arthur Baker and a new radio edit, also known as the "Permanent Mix". On 24 September , the single was again reissued, in its original configuration. This time, it was to publicise the Collector's Edition re-issues of the band's three albums. Although the single was now issued on the Warner label , it retained the classic Factory packaging, including the FAC 23 catalogue number.
According to Curtis's wife Deborah, to create the single cover photo, the song title was etched upon a sheet of metal; this was aged with acid and exposed to the weather to create the appearance of a stone slab. This photograph was taken by Bernard Pierre Wolff in The video was shot by the band themselves on 25 April as they rehearsed the song at T. Davidson's studio, where the band had previously rehearsed during the early days of their career.
At the start of the video, the door that opens and shuts is carved with Ian Curtis' name; reportedly this was the beginning of an abusive message the rest later erased carved into the door. Due to poor production, the video's colour is 'browned out' at some points. Also, as the track recorded during the recording of the video was poor, it was replaced with the single-edit recording of the song by the band's record company in Australia, leading to problems with the synchronisation of music and video.
This edited version of the music video would later become the official version due to the improvement of sound quality. This was the only promotional video the band ever produced as Ian Curtis hanged himself three weeks after the video was recorded. In , the song was listed by Rolling Stone magazine at number in its list of the " Greatest Songs of All Time".
The song is also listed as being one of the 5 best indie songs of all time in the "All Time Indie Top 50". The song reached number 1 in the inaugural Triple J Hottest music poll of and again in In , the online magazine Pitchfork ranked "Love Will Tear Us Apart" seventh on its list of the " best songs of the s".
It features a cover version of the Joy Division song. It was originally released in two different versions with Jarboe black sleeve and Gira red sleeve providing vocals, along with two semi-acoustic versions of songs from their LP Children of God. On some versions, a fourth song was appended: A solo acoustic version of "New Mind".
